Perimenopause & Fitness: Let's Talk About It

Perimenopause: When Your Body Starts Playing by New Rules

If you’ve hit your late 30s or 40s and suddenly thought, Wait… why doesn’t my body work the way it used to? — you’re definitely not the only one asking that question.

Welcome to perimenopause: the transition leading up to menopause, when estrogen and progesterone begin to fluctuate. It can last for several years and may bring changes in sleep, mood, energy, recovery, brain fog, body composition, hot flashes, and more.

And here’s something we wish more women were told: the way we approach fitness may need to change, too.

More isn’t always better

For years, many of us learned that getting “fit” meant more cardio, eating less, sweating harder, and squeezing in another workout whenever we could.

Midlife is a great time to rethink that strategy.

As hormones change, they can affect muscle, bone, connective tissue, sleep, recovery, metabolism, and how our bodies respond to stress. Instead of simply doing more, this season calls for training smarter.

Think: strength first, daily movement, smart intensity, mobility, balance, recovery, sleep, good nutrition, community, and consistency.

Strong is the goal

Strength training becomes especially important during this stage of life. Maintaining muscle supports everyday movement, metabolism, balance, independence, and bone health. And because bone loss can happen without obvious symptoms, loaded movements like squats, hinges, lunges, presses, rows, and carries can be an important part of supporting our bodies as we age.

But that doesn’t mean every workout needs to leave you exhausted.

Some days you’ll feel strong. Some days you won’t. Poor sleep, stress, and hormonal fluctuations are real. Consistency doesn’t require every day to feel the same.

That sounds like what our instructors preach at every FIT4MOM class. Whether it's a Body Ignite or a Strides 360 class. Listen to your body! ❤️

Let’s talk about it

There is SO much more to this conversation—and many of us entered this stage of motherhood without even knowing what perimenopause was.

Join FIT4MOM Silicon Valley Central on Zoom on October 23 for a relaxed conversation about perimenopause and menopause. Come listen, learn, ask questions, or simply realize you’re not the only one wondering what the heck is happening.

Because motherhood keeps changing—and so do we.
