If you’ve felt like a completely different person since having your baby… you’re not imagining it.
The fourth trimester is a time of major hormonal shifts, and those changes impact everything from your mood to your energy to your physical recovery.
The Big Picture
Right after birth, your body experiences a rapid drop in pregnancy hormones like estrogen and progesterone, while hormones that support breastfeeding and bonding, like prolactin and oxytocin, increase.
This shift happens quickly, especially in the first few days postpartum, and can take a few months (or longer) to fully regulate.
What That Can Feel Like
These hormonal changes can show up as:
- Mood swings or emotional highs and lows
- Fatigue or brain fog
- Changes in your menstrual cycle
- Vaginal dryness or physical discomfort
- A delayed or evolving bond with your baby
All of this is normal. And all of it deserves support.
A Few Key Hormones to Know
- Estrogen & Progesterone drop quickly after birth, which can affect mood, energy, and healing
- Oxytocin supports bonding, breastfeeding, and uterine recovery
- Prolactin helps regulate milk production and can delay the return of your cycle
- Relaxin stays in your system for months, keeping joints more mobile (and a little less stable)
Your body is working hard to rebalance while also caring for your baby.
