Core Recovery in the Fourth Trimester

The fourth trimester, typically the first 12 weeks after baby arrives, is not about “bouncing back.” It is about healing, reconnecting to your body, and rebuilding strength slowly and intentionally.

During pregnancy, your core and pelvic floor changed tremendously. In these early postpartum weeks, we want to focus less on intensity and more on breathwork, posture, gentle movement, and stability.

At FIT4MOM Silicon Valley Central, we believe this season deserves support, patience, and community.

What Core Recovery Really Looks Like

Early postpartum core work should feel slow, supported, and intentional. Think:

  • Breathing and reconnecting to your core
  • Gentle pelvic floor engagement
  • Small, controlled movements
  • Stability before intensity

If something feels painful, heavy, or uncomfortable, your body is asking for more support, and that is okay.

The Best Positions for Early Postpartum RecoverySupine (On Your Back)

Gentle core work on your back can help rebuild connection and stability. Keeping knees bent and movements small helps support healing while reducing pressure on the core and pelvic floor.

Standing

Standing movements should focus on posture, balance, and stability. Smaller ranges of motion and intentional pauses help moms reconnect to their bodies safely.

Side-Lying

Side-lying positions are a wonderful option in the fourth trimester because they provide support while gently rebuilding strength in the core and hips.

Positions to Be Careful With

Prone (On Your Stomach)

In the early postpartum weeks, lying on the stomach can place too much pressure on healing abdominal muscles, C-sections, and the pelvic floor. As healing progresses, moms can slowly work toward more supported positions like hands-and-knees core work.

Seated Core Work

Some seated exercises can create extra pressure on healing tissues. Breath-holding and intense abdominal work should be avoided while the body recovers.

Recovery Is Not a Race

here is no prize for rushing postpartum recovery. This season is about creating a strong foundation for motherhood, movement, and long-term health.

That is exactly why we have Fourth Trimester+ Core & Restore at FIT4MOM Silicon Valley Central. This gentle outdoor class combines core reconnection, posture support, a short walk, stretching, and community with moms who truly understand this stage of life.

Come exactly as you are. Your village is waiting for you.
